Issue Snapshot view

In the Baseline App, when a baseline is committed or completed, it is locked, and the issues within that baseline are frozen in their current state. The Issue Snapshot View allows users to view the state of any issue at the time of baseline commitment, helping teams track changes and compare progress over time.

What is an Issue Snapshot?

An Issue Snapshot captures and displays all key information about a Jira issue as it existed at the time when the baseline was committed. It freezes the issue’s data, ensuring that the historical state is preserved, even if the issue continues to evolve in Jira.

How to Access the Issue Snapshot View:

  1. Navigate to the Baseline Home Page

    • Go to the Baseline Home where you can see the list of baselines, including those with the status Committed or Completed.

  2. Locate the Issue in the Baseline’s Issue Table

    • In the issue table for the selected baseline, look for the column labeled View Snapshot next to each issue.

    • The View Snapshot option is only available for Committed or Completed baselines.

  3. Click on "View Snapshot"

    • Click the View Snapshot link for the desired issue. This will open the Issue Snapshot View.

Information Displayed in the Snapshot:

The Issue Snapshot View provides the following information as it was recorded at the time of baseline commitment:

  • Issue ID: The Jira issue key (e.g., BS-28).

  • Summary: A short description of the issue.

  • Assignee: The person responsible for the issue at the time of commitment.

  • Reporter: The person who originally reported the issue.

  • Priority: The priority level assigned to the issue (e.g., High, Medium).

  • Created On: The date the issue was created in Jira.

  • Original Estimate: The initial time estimate for completing the issue.

  • Fix Versions: Any versions linked to the issue at the time.

  • Comments: Any comments or updates on the issue up until the baseline was committed.

Additionally, the page may display historical data like:

  • Status: The issue’s workflow status at the time of the snapshot (e.g., Backlog, In Progress, Done).

  • Labels: Any labels associated with the issue.

  • Team: The assigned team (if applicable).

Why Use the Snapshot View?

The Issue Snapshot View is an invaluable tool for understanding how issues have changed over time. It allows teams to:

  • Track the original scope of work and identify any changes or scope creep.

  • Review estimates and compare them with actual time spent.

  • Ensure all stakeholders are aware of the issue’s state at critical milestones.

  • Avoid unnecessary rework by providing clarity on what was discussed and approved at the time of baseline commitment.

Use Case Example:

In a committed baseline, clicking View Snapshot will allow you to see the exact details of an issue, such as the original estimate, status, assignee, and comments made before the baseline was committed. This is especially useful for tracking deviations from the plan or understanding the rationale behind specific changes in the project.
